Canon has officially announced the EOS C500, the professional 4K video camera output that it promised at the NAB trade show in April. A continuation of the concept of the C300, it can capture Raw 4K video footage and offers frame rates of up to 120fps in compressed 4K. It also captures 2K footage (2,048 x 1,080 pixels) at 12-bit, with 4:4:4 Y’CbCr chroma sub-sampling for high colour resolution. The company has also confirmed four cinema EOS lenses alongside it – the EF mount CN-E15.5-47mm T2.8 L S and CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L S, and the same optics in PL mount (known as the CNE15.5-47mm T2.8 L SP and CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L SP respectively).

The Canon C500 is released with plenty of applications where high image quality, extreme portability, and efficient workflow are of the great importance. The Canon EOS C500 shots videos with Canon’s XF Codec – a file-based MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper.

What is MXF?

MXF is a video format for the commutation of programme material between servers, tape streamers and to digital archives. Its contents can be a complete programme and complete packages enven or sequences. MXF is self-contained, holding complete content without need of external material.

MXF combines video, audio together with programme data, such as text – together termed essence – along with metadata and loads them into a container. It holds a sequence of video frames, each complete with associated audio, and data essence, plus frame-based metadata.

The Canon EOS C500 offers a Super 35mm, 8.85-megapixel CMOS image sensor, our DIGIC DV III Image Processor and an expansive range of recording and output options specifically for 4K, 2K and HD image acquisition. The Canon C500 also offers multiple recording bit rates, resolutions and variable frame rates to expand creative flexibility, allowing users to work in all kinds of environment.

To get more application from Canon C500, we always need to enjoy videos on other devices or do some simple editing on the video editing tools. But how can we make it come true while most of media players and video editing tools don’t support MXF smoothly work with them?
